Ok, is it just me or do these Spring/Summer ’16 Balenciaga slippers look familiar?
I remember a time that I was quite fond of back in 1999/2000 where these “slide-on spa slippers” were called Chinese slippers and they were all the rage.
You could by them everywhere from the beauty supply store to the actual corner. Like, not the corner store but from a guy with a table stacked with everything from jumbo hoops to…Chinese slippers.
Now obvi, these are elevated. The flowers are more grand, there’s lace instead of mesh and they’re so on-trend with fashion’s latest sleepwear obsession.
So these are like fully blossomed Chinese slippers. We had them as weird awkward pre-teens and now they’re grown, sexy and Balenciaga.
They even had a questionable experimental phase. We started to see versions with heels, wedges and even sneakers. It got pretty ugly. Glad to see them come out on the other side unscathed.
It looks to me as though Alexander Wang is giving a nod to a simpler time, a time where life and fashion were about flavored lipgloss, name belts and slipping on your shoes before heading out.
But what really makes this re-introduction special is that it officially means we weren’t crazy. If this is now chic it means we were before our time, no?
That’s what I’m going with.
Either way I’m not mad at you Alexander, you can make anything hot.
Let’s just hope this doesn’t mean that the early 2000’s are trying to sneak their way back into our wardrobes. The slippers are where we draw the line.
